In Color for Designers: Exploration, Theory, & Application, Richard Mehl will give you a foundational understanding of color theory principles and demonstrate how to apply them. Richard has studied alongside design legends Paul Rand, Bradbury Thompson and Herbert Matter; in this class he’ll share insights gleaned from 12 years of teaching and writing about color in design.

Richard takes an accessible approach to the serious study of color theory for designers. You’ll be exposed to a relevant series of ideas and skills by exploring a range of analog and digital projects.

About Author

Richard Mehl is an accomplished designer with a wealth of experience in the field. As an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Richard has honed his expertise in teaching color theory and design principles. With a background in graphic design and a passion for visual compositions, he brings a unique perspective to his courses.

Richard's journey in the creative world began with a deep appreciation for art, instilled by his parents, who were florists. He pursued his artistic endeavors through photography and later delved into graphic design, studying at renowned institutions like Yale. Throughout his career, Richard has worked with prestigious institutions and non-profit organizations, infusing his formalist approach into his designs.

Driven by his love for teaching, Richard authored the book "Playing with Color: 50 Experiments for Exploring Color Design Principles," where he shares his experiences and techniques for teaching color theory to graphic designers. With a focus on creating engaging learning experiences, Richard's courses empower students to unlock their creative potential and develop a deeper understanding of color's transformative power.
